Your Truck's Aftertreatment System

Aftertreatment shouldn't be an afterthought — it's a key part of protecting the environment and keeping the air safe to breathe.

A diesel truck's aftertreatment system filters particulates from the exhaust and converts harmful compounds into less harmful ones. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) filter is the first step in this process.

A DOC filter operates much like a catalytic converter on a gasoline engine does. The inside surface of the filter is coated with platinum, palladium, and other metals that help oxidize the raw exhaust, converting dangerous carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and water. The heat generated by these reactions helps to burn up any remaining fuel or hydrocarbons.

After the DOC filter, the exhaust passes through selective catalytic reduction, where a special diesel exhaust fluid reacts with the remaining nitrogen monoxide, converting it into nitrogen dioxide and water. 

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is the last stop. It filters out fine particulate matter, leaving an exhaust primarily composed of steam and other less harmful chemicals.
